A Kissimmee mother was arrested after deputies said her four children were found without an adult at home while she was on a Las Vegas work trip. The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office account, reported by CBS News, says Irene Miller, 50, faces four counts of child neglect without great bodily harm.
The charges are allegations. Miller was arrested after arriving on a return flight at Orlando International Airport on Oct. 23, according to the sheriff’s office information reported by CBS News and WPDE.
What do deputies say happened during the Florida mom’s Las Vegas trip?
Deputies were sent to the home shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 21 after a child called 911 to report that a dumbbell had fallen on her 9-year-old brother’s head, the sheriff’s office said.
Responding deputies found four children, ages 14, 12, 11 and 9, with no adult present, according to CBS News. First responders took the 9-year-old to Celebration Hospital, where he was treated and released, the reports said.
Investigators said Miller had left for Las Vegas on Oct. 18 and was due back Oct. 23. She told deputies she was working there, according to CBS News.
What childcare arrangement did Miller describe?
Miller told deputies that a babysitter traveling from Tampa was to help the children get ready for school in the morning and check on them after school, according to the sheriff’s office. The babysitter was not expected to stay overnight, the agency said.
The reports do not include a public statement from Miller beyond what authorities said she told deputies. They also do not include a charging document or court record.
The children’s father was contacted and agreed to take all four children to his home, CBS News and WPDE reported. Detectives then arranged to meet Miller after her return flight, according to the reports.
What charges does Miller face?
Miller was booked into the Orange County jail on four counts of child neglect without great bodily harm, according to WPDE’s report on the sheriff’s office account. Each count is an allegation, and the reports do not state the outcome of any court proceedings.
