Paul Pelosi, the 86-year-old husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is facing a misdemeanor hit-and-run charge in Napa County after prosecutors say he allegedly struck a parked car and left the scene.

The Napa County District Attorney’s Office announced the charge Friday. District Attorney Allison Haley said Pelosi also faces an infraction for allegedly making an unlawful turn.

According to authorities, the collision happened July 3 in Yountville, a Napa Valley town about 50 miles north of San Francisco. The Napa County Sheriff’s Office said the vehicle Pelosi allegedly hit was parked on the side of the road and was not occupied.

The sheriff’s office said the parked vehicle was left with major damage to its rear.

A criminal complaint cited by prosecutors identifies the car Pelosi was driving as a 2025 Maserati GranCabrio convertible.

Pelosi is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 14, officials said.

Why prosecutors spoke publicly

The district attorney’s office said it usually does not issue news releases about misdemeanor hit-and-run cases involving only property damage.

In this case, the office said it made an exception because of the level of public and media attention surrounding the matter.

A spokesperson for the Pelosi family previously gave CBS News a statement on July 4 saying Pelosi had contacted the owner of the damaged vehicle.

“Mr. Paul Pelosi has personally apologized to the owner of the vehicle and assured them that he would take responsibility for the damage to their vehicle,” the spokesperson said. “Speaker Pelosi will not be commenting further on this private matter.”

No further comment from Pelosi was included in the announcement from prosecutors.

Case follows earlier public attention on Pelosi

Paul Pelosi has been the subject of national attention before. In October 2022, he was attacked during a violent break-in at the San Francisco home he shares with Nancy Pelosi.

Authorities described that attack as politically motivated, according to CBS News reporting at the time.

The new Napa County case is separate and involves only the alleged July 3 property-damage collision, according to prosecutors.
