John Bonham’s 1972 Jensen Interceptor heads to auction
The Led Zeppelin drummer’s reef blue Jensen is expected to sell for £40,000 to £50,000, with a lingering question over a 1977 ditch crash.

A 1972 Jensen Interceptor III once owned by Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham is going under the hammer in the U.K., giving classic rock fans and car collectors the same shiny target.
Iconic Auctioneers lists the reef blue Interceptor, fitted with a red interior, for sale on Saturday, July 25, with bidding due to begin at 11 a.m. local time. The auction house gives the car an estimate of £40,000 to £50,000, about $53,000 to $66,000.
The listing says Bonham’s link to the car is “well documented,” and indicates there is paperwork supporting his ownership. It does not spell out much more about how the Led Zeppelin drummer used it, or whether it is tied to one of the more dramatic car stories attached to him.
That mystery has become part of the appeal. Two books cited by Rolling Stone, Bob Spitz’s 2021 Led Zeppelin biography and Chris Salewicz’s 2018 Jimmy Page biography, both recount a September 1977 incident involving Bonham and a Jensen Interceptor.
In Spitz’s account, Bonham was driving home from a pub in Cutnall Green, a village in Worcestershire, when the Interceptor left the road and ended up in a ditch. Spitz wrote that Bonham had been speeding and intoxicated. According to that account, the crash threw the drummer sideways, broke two of his ribs and left him able to climb out and make his way home.
The auction listing does not confirm that the car being sold is the same Interceptor involved in that reported crash. Rolling Stone reported that a representative for Iconic Auctioneers did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether the auction car and the ditch-crash car are one and the same.
The car’s more recent history is clearer. According to Iconic Auctioneers, the current owner acquired the Jensen in “barn find condition” and it needed a full rebuild. The auction house says the restoration took place between 2020 and 2023 and cost more than £83,000, around $110,000.
That restoration bill is more than the car’s current estimate, at least at the guide price, but Bonham provenance gives the Interceptor a different kind of pull. The late drummer, photographed performing with Led Zeppelin at Madison Square Garden in 1977, remains one of rock’s most closely followed figures decades after his death.
For bidders, the sale offers a rare combination: a British grand tourer, a documented link to one of Led Zeppelin’s founding members and a possible connection to a road mishap that has lived on through rock biographies. The confirmed facts stop at ownership, restoration and the auction listing. The ditch story, for now, remains a tantalizing maybe.
