A Texas nurse became a Maryland Racetrax $37,951 winner after trying the lottery game for the first time during a September visit to the Baltimore area, according to the Maryland Lottery.

The agency said a stranger at a Halethorpe convenience store urged the unnamed visitor to play, supplied the selections and helped complete her wager. She later returned to Baltimore to collect the prize.

How did the Texas visitor win the $37,951 Racetrax prize?

The woman was in Baltimore to see family and friends when she bought the ticket at Quick Mart, 4225 Annapolis Road in Halethorpe, the Maryland Lottery said. She had not played Racetrax before.

Racetrax is a Maryland Lottery game built around virtual horse races. The player spent $70 on a 50-cent Superfecta Wheel wager covering 20 races, according to the agency.

Her ticket paid off in the sixth race. The Maryland Lottery reported that horses numbered 10, 7 and 9 took the first three places in that order, while No. 5 finished fourth, producing the $37,951 prize.

The Superfecta Wheel is one of the game’s more complex wager types, the lottery said. The stranger’s suggestion was part of this player’s account, not a method that ensures a win.

She did not realize the ticket had won before leaving Maryland. Back in Texas, she checked it on the lottery’s website after a Baltimore friend asked whether she had looked at it, according to the Maryland Lottery.

After seeing that the numbers matched, she contacted a family member, who confirmed the prize amount. The winner claimed the money at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore on Oct. 15, the agency said.

She told lottery officials she plans to use the winnings to launch a mobile transport company. The Quick Mart is also set to receive a $379.51 retailer bonus for selling the ticket, according to the Maryland Lottery.

For winners, claiming a prize follows the game’s rules and ticket verification process. Dayline’s guide explains how lottery payouts work, including the differences between smaller prizes and major jackpots.
