Melissa Leo joins Will Smith’s Supermax cast

Melissa Leo has joined the Supermax cast alongside Will Smith, Variety reported Sept. 1. The Oscar and Emmy-winning actor’s role in the Amazon MGM Studios and Miramax action-thriller has not been revealed.

The film is already shooting in New South Wales, Australia, according to Variety, with David Gordon Green directing. Smith leads an ensemble that also includes AnnaSophia Robb, Jason Clarke, Jaafar Jackson, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Andrés Almeida, Martin Bats Bradford and Erika Ringor.

What is Supermax about?

Supermax follows two FBI agents as they investigate an apparently impossible killing inside a maximum-security prison, Variety reported. David Weil and David J. Rosen wrote the screenplay.

The project brings Leo into a cast headed by Smith, while keeping her character under wraps. Leo won an Academy Award for The Fighter, earned an Oscar nomination for Frozen River and won an Emmy for Louie.

Where will Supermax be released?

Amazon MGM bought worldwide rights to Supermax from Miramax in May for a reported $70 million, Variety said. The film is planned for release on Prime Video, though no release date has been announced in the available report.

Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman of The Picture Company are producing with Smith and Adam Fishbach for Westbrook Studios, Variety reported. Weil and Rosen are executive producers, along with Miramax executives Jonathan Glickman, Alexandra Loewy, Thom Zadra and Spencer Ela. James Lassiter and Miguel Melendez are also executive producing for Westbrook, while Symone Crews and Natalie Laine Williams are associate producers.

For now, the key mystery beyond the prison murder is Leo’s part in the story. Variety’s report did not identify her character or provide further details about the production.
